英語の「英」とは、“English” という単語のポルトガル語訳 “inglês” の漢訳「英吉利」の略である（イギリスのイングランド地方をさす言葉と考えられる）。「英吉利」については他に “Inglaterra” の漢訳とする説もある。「英語」という語は「イングランド語」の略だが、日本語や中国語、朝鮮語でこの言語を指し示す場合、フランス語やドイツ語など他のヨーロッパ発祥の言語と違ってこの略称が一般的に通用している。
